Is Expensive Pet Food Really Better or You're Just Wasting Your Money

Getting the right kind of pet food for your furry family member can be tricky. Owners want to give their dogs the best of everything, including nutrition. But is it really necessary to spend hundreds of dollars for specialized dog food?

Will Expensive Pet Food Make Your Dog Healthier?

Most owners treat their pets like family members. With that affection comes the desire to give them the best kind of pet food available. For families with extra cash to spend, feeding pets raw, organic, grain-free mixtures is no problem. However, people with smaller bank accounts may not be able to shell out hundreds of dollars on specialized dog food.

41 Action News found dog food ranging from $10-$90 in groceries around Kansas City, Mo. Pet store owners argue that while $90 may be a bit steep, each serving packs enough nutrition needed for most dogs. Veterinary Nutritionist Allison Wara, from the University of Missouri,  however, points out that price isn’t the only measure of pet food effectiveness.

Wara says the most important thing to do when choosing dog food is to peek at the back of the label.

“On the back of every label you should find a nutritional adequacy statement and that statement will say whether or not the pet food is complete and balanced,” she said.

Feeding your pets more doesn’t necessarily mean they’re healthy. The quality of food is also important. However, choosing the best pet food alone can’t ensure your pet’s overall health. You still need them to be active. A proper balance of exercise and nutrient-filled diet will help keep your dog healthy and happy.

Visit the Association of American Feed Control Officials webpage for more information regarding your pet’s nutritional needs.
