Ever wondered why dogs save lives, especially their owners? According to studies, canines bond with humans on a physiological level – like how a child connects with its mother. This bond enables them to develop a loyalty with their owners that even pushes them to sacrifice themselves. Read more about this news from CNN below.
Why Dogs Save Lives | Find Out Why Canines Become Loyal
Firefighters rescuing a trapped infant inside a burning house in Baltimore, Maryland, last summer reportedly found an unbelievable sight.
Eight-month-old Viviana was severely burned, but alive. Inexplicably, Polo, the family dog, was found laying on top of the baby, apparently saving her life, according to CNN affiliate WBAL. Sadly, Polo didn’t survive the fire.

Aside from Polo, there have been numerous reports of dogs sacrificing themselves to save their human family members from harm. Some people might chalk it up to loyalty, but recent studies show that it’s more than that. Dogs and owners’ strong bond have physiological as well as emotional reasoning.
Emotional and Physiological Connection
According to a Psychology research, dog and human connections work the same way babies and parents establish their bond. The paper further notes that the reason why dogs save lives is that of a hormone produced when dogs and owners become close. When dogs look into their owner’s eyes, both parties produce oxytocin that makes them grow attached to the other. Called the “oxytocin loop,” this physiological phenomenon encourages dogs to protect and care for their owners.
Meanwhile, a separate study indicates that dogs can read human facial expressions as well as changes in mood and emotions. This hypersensitivity to human emotions may be a factor in determining whether their owners are in danger.
Man’s Best Friend
Despite all the studies coming out on the science behind dogs’ loyalty to their owners, the topic still hasn’t been entirely delved into. Then again, whatever scientific reason influences this, pet owners would still feel how much dogs love their human parents.
